Crochet FAQs

Everything you wanted to know about getting started

What’s the difference between crochet and knitting?

Crochet uses a single hook and works with one loop at a time, while knitting uses two needles and holds many loops at once. Crochet tends to be easier for beginners to pick up and is great for making 3D shapes — perfect for amigurumi!

What hook size should a beginner start with?

A 5mm (US H/8) hook is a great starting point. It’s easy to hold and works well with medium-weight (worsted) yarn, which is the most common and forgiving for beginners. Pair it with a light-coloured yarn so you can easily see your stitches.

How long does it take to learn crochet?

Most people can make their first simple project within a weekend! The chain stitch and single crochet are the two basics — once those click (usually within an hour of practice), you can follow beginner patterns. Consistency is the key — even 15 minutes a day adds up fast.

What yarn is best for amigurumi?

Cotton or acrylic yarns in worsted or DK weight are the go-to for amigurumi. They hold their shape well, show stitch definition clearly, and come in a huge range of colours. Kate personally loves using Paintbox Simply DK and Lion Brand Comfy Cotton Blend.

Can I sell items I make from Kate’s patterns?

Yes! All patterns on Made With Kate come with a small-maker selling licence. You’re welcome to sell finished items at craft fairs, on Etsy, or at local markets. Just give a little credit — a tag or mention that the pattern is by Made With Kate is always appreciated.
